HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN? INDEED! IT’S A MODERN FAMILY
Bored of those yawn-inducing Indian soaps with Saas – Bahus plotting revenge over each other to achieve the ultimate goal of monopoly over the entire “khandaan”? Right from the foetus of the youngest bahu to the walking stick dependent great grands, the quintessential Indian joint family is getting more and more absurd on the small screen, isn’t it? Well then, let me introduce you to a quirky, albeit immensely lovable twist to this concept.
Modern Family is a popular American TV show that first aired on 23rd September 2009. Based on an interview format, this mockumentary revolves around a hilarious joint family sharing their day-to-day experiences of living with one another or rather tolerating one another with underlying indications to the inevitable love that they share. The main characters of the show are as follows:
Phil Dunphy (played by Ty Burrell): The supposed head of the Dunphy Family and a real estate agent, who believes that his “Phil’s-osophy” is the glue that holds his family together.
Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen): The stay-at-home acting head of the Dunphy family who somehow manages to make sure that her family continues to function smoothly no matter what the crisis is.
Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland): Claire and Phil’s first child is a rather “blonde” brunette. As long as she is popular and hot, she has no care in the world.
Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter): The second Dunphy child, she bears the grey matter of the entire family. Straight A’s and perfect SAT scores are a cake walk for her apart from sarcastically insulting her elder sister.
Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould): The youngest member of the Dunphy family tree, Luke is a rather weird and imaginative kid with a slightly ADHD-like approach to everything.
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson): Claire’s brother, a lawyer and Gay. Mitchell is OCD about anything and everything. He is rather submissive due to his awkward childhood memories.
Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet): Mitchell’s partner and the homemaker of their house, Cam is unapologetically a lover of all things pink and fluffy. He is also a professional clown and is extremely proud of it.
Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons): Cam and Mitchell’s adopted daughter of Vietnamese origins, she literally grows up on the show right from when she is an infant to a feisty little junior school girl who knows just how to handle her Gay dads.
Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill): Claire and Mitchell’s father and the head of the entire Modern Family cast. Jay is the typical grumpy old but not so old man who has earned all the fine things in life due to his rigid ways and rules. However, he is a softy at heart and considers his family his most invaluable possession.
Gloria Pritchett (Sofia Vergara): Jay’s ro’bust’ second wife who can easily pass off as his daughter with her high heels and sexy dresses. But she loves her husband to no end and has made Jay’s life much brighter with her bossy Latina ways. Lookout for her accent!
Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez): Gloria’s son from her first marriage, Manny embraces his effeminate ways with poetry, colognes, coffee preferences, and finely tailored suits and considers sports a disease afflicting other kids his age.
Joe Pritchett (Jeremy Maguire): Gloria and Jay’s second but first biological son, little Joe is the cutest button on the set.
All completely individualistic yet belonging to the same family tree. This unique combination is bound to tickle the funny bones of even the toughest hard-masters! The essence of this show lies in its simplicity and effortless humour. With no dramatic climaxes, over the top sets or mind-boggling plots, each episode is just another day in the life of this American family. Wrapped up in a fantastic script full of wit, satire, sarcasm and relatable buffoonery, each dialogue makes you clutch your sides while you laugh till it aches. The cast couldn’t have been more perfect with each actor doing complete justice to his/her role. Excellent comic timing and genuine acting is the secret, I guess.
Having released 8 seasons with 161 and counting episodes so far, this American sitcom and its cast have won numerous accolades and awards including the most coveted Emmy and Golden Globe. Gaining popularity not only in the United States but also all over the world (and especially in India) due to its relatable storyline and light-hearted theme, Modern Family definitely wins the spot on the top of mine and many others’ list of favourite American TV Show. So the next time you feel like you belong to the weirdest family on the planet, tune into this laugh-riot and you will no longer feel alone!
